Other titles:RAF STRIKE COMMAND MOBILE NEWS TEAM - MAY 2008 DELIVERY [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: Two edited RAF Mobile News Team pieces on RAF activities in Iraq, particularly the Basra area, one year after the invasion by Coalition forces.
Description: I. Report on the drive to improve conditions for the Marsh Arab villages in the wetlands of the Al Shatt waterways. One village is being raised above the water level to prevent flooding. Warrant Officer Chris Blackman of 2 Squadron RAF Regiment assists in the liaison with the villagers. Report also stresses the usefulness of training in Arabic which is available for British personnel: interview with Adnan Rissen, teacher. (Presented by Squadron Leader Mike Cairns for the MNT.)
II. report on the changes at Basra International Airport, the APOD (Air Port of Disembarkation) for British forces; the APOD is being rationalised to allow for increased freight and Iraqi commercial traffic; there is also an expansion of the Hercules supply fleet in support of 20th Armoured Brigade and 1st Mechanised Brigade. The item ends humorously with presenter Squadron Leader Howard Leader noting that the RAF had discovered a collapsible splash pool which they have now erected; he takes off his uniform and splashes into the pool (accompanied by two young bikini-clad women).
