Summary: A record of work being undertaken on Horsa gliders, at a Ministry of Aircraft Production factory. Other production work includes a London Midland Scottish (LMS) locomotive being built by the Southern Railway.
Description: (4 December 1942) Aircraft (Horsa glider) parts being manufactured at a Ministry of Aircraft Production factory, at Eastleigh Works in Hampshire. From an elevated angle, finished tail units are mounted on stands in a workshop. Female workers stitch on the fabric skin. Tail units are painted over with a dope adhesive and strips of leather tape are being layered-on. Fabric is shown being passed over a light box to check for defects, and female workers wear respirators as they spray dope over the exposed wooden spars for strengthening. Female workers add the finishing touches to the hull of a 25-ft Fast Motor Boat. Carpenters work on the inside of some wooden hulls. OSH212-214
(8-9 December 1942) A workshop at “Nine Elms”, where workers are “cleaning locomotive parts” (Technical: poor quality). A Southern 4-4-0 locomotive stands directly behind them. (4 January 1942) Inside an Eastleigh Workshop, work is being done on 2-pounder anti-tank guns (Technical: poor quality). An Eastleigh Works, Southern built, but LMS designed 4-6-0 locomotive (No. 8600) leaving production. A close-up shows an “LMS BUILT 1942 SR” plaque at the front of the engine.
