Description: (7 May 1945) American service personnel aboard a troopship, at Southampton Docks (South coast of England), bound for Cherbourg (North West coast of France). A sequence shows the troopship leaving the harbour. (32 sec) SH398
(9 May 1945) Intertitle; “SHIPPING BRITISH BUILT MAIN LINE LOCOMOTIVES TO FRANCE BY SOUTHERN RAILWAY TRAIN FERRY”. “May 9th, 1945. The 1,000th locomotive ferried to N.W. Europe since ‘D’ Day.” “Produced by THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY FILM UNIT”. A row of four 2-8-0 locomotives (including No. 77222 and 79298) coming slowly down the railway track in front of some steep hills in the background. The locomotives are then guided over a linkspan and onto the “HAMPTON FERRY” docked at Dover, the South coast of England. The scene then cuts to one of the locomotives with a plaque on the engine, below the insignia of the Royal Engineers; “THE 1000th BRITISH BUILT FREIGHT LOCOMOTIVE FERRIED TO EUROPE SINCE ‘D’ DAY – locomotive NO. 73755 WEDNESDAY 8th MAY 1945 - LONGMOOR”, and a temporary sign on the front of the engine reads; “1000th BRITISH BUILT WAR DEPT MAIN LINE LOCOMOTIVE FERRIED TO EUROPE SINCE ‘D’ DAY”. A group of British service personnel stand on the engine for the camera. In front of the same engine, group of dignitaries including a Royal Navy Commander stand by the plaque. The scene then cuts back the locomotives going aboard the ferry. Finally, the “LONGMOOR” locomotive boards the ferry hauling a 2-8-0 (No. 73754) locomotive, followed by, a row of War Department coal wagons. (3 min 55 sec) SH399
