Summary: A ceremony to mark the unveiling of a new ‘Merchant Navy’ class Southern locomotive at Waterloo Station in London.
Description: (10 April 1945) Intertitle; “WATERLOO STATION – ENGLAND – ADMIRAL SCHUIRMANN, U.S. NAVY names SOUTHERN RAILWAY ‘MERCHANT NAVY’ CLASS LOCOMOTIVE ‘UNITED STATES LINES’ – APRIL 10th, 1945”. A crowd are gathered around the ‘Merchant Navy’ class locomotive (No. 21C12), which awaits departure from the platform at Waterloo Station, London. Dignitaries speak from a temporary platform erected beside the engine, draped with a British Union Jack and an American flag. The camera pans across to the engine driver, leaning from his cab window, before panning back to US Navy Admiral Schuirmann making a speech at the microphone. A curtain is then pulled back to reveal the “UNITED STATES LINES – MERCHANT NAVY CLASS” plaque. Some of the dignitaries’ then board the locomotive as it hauls the 12:50pm train out from the station. Passengers lean out and wave from the carriage windows as they pass. SH401
