Description: (5 October 1946) A new ‘West Country’ class locomotive (WILTON) leaving the Brighton railway works, the South coast of England. The Southern 4-6-2 engine (No. 21C141) is filmed from a couple of different angles as it emerges from the depot. SH414
(7-9 January 1947) Inside the Brighton railway works, smiths are at work hammering heated metal on an anvil. Followed by some welding work. (1 min) SH415
(10 January 1947) “Inspector Winshall” in his office at New Cross in London, as he signs documents for a colleague, before looking in detail at some plans with an engineer. This is followed by a sequence showing a “new man” arriving at the office. Following a sign to the “PER. WAY INSPṞ” office, he enters wearing (presumably) a demobbed service uniform, and is handed a booklet before leaving through the same door. A “CAMP COFFEE” advertisement is displayed beside the door. The scene then cuts to two men (“Granger”) walking up an unknown railway line. One of the men carries out running repairs on a section of track. (1 min 40 sec) SH416
