Summary: Makeshift ambulance coaches deliver wounded men to Margate Station, where they are loaded into ambulance trains. Australian troops arrive into Waterloo Station, and Local Defence Volunteers (LDV) on exercise in Maidstone. There is also a brief record of British troops manoeuvring a Howitzer along a station platform.
Description: (21 June 1941) A Leyland “EAST KENT” coach pulls into Margate Station, on the East coast of Kent, marked “AMBULANCE”. A group of ARP Wardens (Air Raid Precaution) unload a wounded man on a stretcher through a set of doors at the rear of the coach. Casualties are carried through the station and loaded into an ambulance train. Nurses, members of the Woman’s Voluntary Services (WVS) and railway staff assist the ARP Wardens. A second Leyland “EAST KENT” ambulance coach arrives into the station forecourt. CH49
(27 June 1940) Australian troops arriving into Waterloo Station, London. Some lean out of carriage windows as the train comes into the platform. The troops disembark, wearing Australian Army uniforms including slouch hats and general service badges. The scene then cuts to the Australian troops marching past the Memorial Arch outside the front of the station. (2 min 07 sec) CH52
(16 March 1940) British service personnel roll a First World War Howitzer along a station platform, presumably the Hilsea Station near Portsmouth (featured in CH23-24 in BTF 76). (7 July 1940) Local Defence Volunteers (LDV) on exercise in Maidstone. Two LDV personnel crouch beside railway tracks outside of the station terminal holding rifles. Both wear civilian clothes and British Army helmets. They take a third man in mock Wehrmacht uniform prisoner, presenting him to uniformed LDV personnel along with some papers. (4 min 41 sec) CH58-59
