Summary: The training and a dramatised example of the use of carrier pigeons by the Royal Canadian Air Force: 2 birds are carried by each plane on coastal patrol as a reserve means of communication in case of emergencies.
Description: The pigeons are carried in special containers (water and shock proofed) with partially completed SOS messages already attached: in the film's example, the crew of a Lockheed Hudson are briefed, their pigeons packed and put in the plane, take off. Over film of pigeons in loft, commentary talks of strength of homing instinct, and pigeons' war record; a short sequence on training birds. (Reel 2) The plane suffers simultaneous engine and radio trouble and the pilot has to ditch - one of the pigeons is responsible for a prompt air/sea rescue. Film ends with commentary talking of the 'mystery' of the homing instinct.
