Summary: American views on the European war in mid-1941.
Description: News (eg from Ed Murrow in London) brings "growing realisation of how near to the American community is war"; US heritage threatened. Reactions include defensive preparations (army call-up, local volunteer organisations) and support for England: "the vast majority... believe that a British victory is essential to the safety of their own country." Opinion poll (Dr Gallup) reveals 60% reject isolationist views (eg of Burton Wheeler), accept Franklin D Roosevelt's warning against "dangerous form of wishful thinking." Film illustrates accepted interpretation of war: "Nazi tyranny" (slave labour, occupied Paris) checked only through "indomitable spirit of Europe's last free people." Although RAF has already "performed the miracle of the Second World War" (meaning bombing offensive rather than Battle of Britain, apparently) Britain needs US aid. Letters to Washington demand more support; although some voices raised in opposition (Vito Marcantonio, Verne Marshall), President pledges "ever increasing" material aid. Britain stands firm but "her war may yet be lost" in Atlantic; her "highest hopes" placed in US pledges of support.
