Summary: Record of a trial in which an Alvis Stalwart all terrain vehicle is sprayed with a simulated contaminant spray from a Westland Whirlwind helicopter.
Description: (Reel 1) 0-100 A. Stalwart vehicle (09 EB 35) is shown in target position on open range, ready for helicopter spray run. Sampling cards are shown, mounted on wooden frames, for use in assessing the spread of the contaminant. The helicopter (a Westland Whirlwind) makes several dummy runs over the Stalwart.
(Reel 2) 100-200 B. Helicopter makes a live spray run over the vehicle, discharging the agent in a yellow spray; contamination of vehicle and surrounding area is shown. (Note men standing with red flags at the border of the test area.) Second run, no visible contaminant released. After the test: close ups of sampling card and parts of of the vehicle structure, showing yellow specks on the green metal.
(Reel 3) 200-300 C. Sampling cards are removed from the vehicle. by a team of four chemists (none wearing protective clothing). The Stalwart drives away from the sampling area. Sampling cards on the ground are prepared for analysis of decontamination concentrations: they are removed from their mounts, folded and placed into large test tubes filled with clear fluid (pure water?). The chemist is in civilian clothes. Troops in NBC suits unload a number of jerricans from the back of the Stalwart. (2 mins 50 mins)
(Reel 4) 300-400 D. Further unloading of jerricans. The soldiers then get on board a laboratory vehicle (a bus with the windows covered) for an ultraviolet assessment of the degree of contamination. They are watched by scientists (who are in white coats but not NBC suits). Removal of NBC suits, which are bagged prior to each soldier entering the laboratory. Decontamination of Stalwart vehicle by spraying with bleach; this is carried out by a uniformed member of the MOD police using a hosepipe attached to a red-liveried bowser vehicle. (2 mins 50 secs)
