Summary: Untitled, unedited film showing tests on Gruinard Island prior to decontamination.
Description: (Tape 1) Teams of scientists divide an area of grassy moorland into several quadrants, each of which is then treated in a different way - grass cutting by petrol mower, grass cutting by rotary mower, burning of gas with small flamethrower. The burnt quadrants are edged with corrugated metal strips.
(Tape 2) Twelve quadrants have now been laid out in three rows of four, quadrants alternating one of the three methods of treatment. with three left fallow. Large metal tanks are filled with a mixture of water and chemical (formaldehyde), and checked with a formaldemeter. The mixture is then decanted into bottles and sprayed onto the quadrants by men in respirators. Shot of dead grassy quadrants.
(Tape 3) Compilation of general views: library scenes, with rows of bound "chemical abstracts". Commodore CBM computer with "acoustic data coupler" (modem). Dot matrix printer creates list of titles of chemical abstracts. Final brief shots back on Gruinard, where the water/formaldehyde tanks are removed by Wessex helicopter.
