Summary: Account of Trial Svelte, a toxic chemical trial on board «HMS Birmingham».
Description: Participants don NBC suits (with lifejackets underneath) and pre-wetting of the exterior of the ship (precautionary spraying of decontaminant) takes place. Inside, a residual vapour detector is used to test the integrity of the citadel. Decontamination procedures on deck. A "professional undresser" takes off other people's NBC suits (problems with decontamination procedures highlighted in detail) before three-stage cleansing operation. Assessment of the crew's ability to carry out routine tasks under NBC conditions; simulated missile attack and casualty handling procedures under NBC attack also assessed. Use of CAM (chemical agent monitor) device. Simulated CS missile attack at end posits a direct hit, in which the citadel is breached.
