Title:CHIEFTAIN MBT IN A CHEMICAL ENVIRONMENT [Main Title]
Film Number:DED 198
Other titles:PORTON DOWN VIDEO COLLECTION [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: Documentary recording trials carried out on a Chieftain main battle tank between 1982 and 1984, including the firing of a gun in a chemical environment.
Description: Chieftain tank drives onto the range (Bovington ?)in preparation for the trial. Nearby, a bulldozer excavates a stockbutt (this was not used in the two trials shown here, but see DED 203). Technicians in NBC suits set up the bomblets containing the dispersal agent on a single line of wooden posts for the static trial, and a set of five lines of posts for the cross-country trial. Animated diagrams demonstrate the dispersal patterns. The tank crew get into protective NBC gear before setting off in the tank. An ambulance is parked nearby. Static trial: the tank is positioned 25 feet from the bomblets and, after release of the agent, fires five rounds. Second trial, cross-country, has the tank in motion, driving past the array of bomblets which release the chemical agent. At the end of the trials, the crew dismount; their suits are decontaminated before they are removed and binned. End titles: "CDE and MVEE wish to acknowledge the support of 4 RTR Tidworth and 1 RTR Bovington". "Produced by Photographic Section CDE Porton Down". (11 mins 35 secs)
