Summary: Record with narration of a chemical warfare/EOD (explosive ordnance disposal) scenario carried out at Porton Down ranges.
Description: The scenario posits that an airfield has been attacked by cluster bombs and nerve agents. Arrival of section of troops in NBC suits; a plan of action is devised. A "radar installation" (represented by a caravan) is the priority clearance area - flags are used to mark the position of unexploded bomblets. (These training bomblets had been provided by CDE, and one in three was "active" and would give off red smoke if triggered.) Blast bomblets were sandbagged for extra protection - controlled explosions using a Shrike hard-wire bomb exploder. Bomblet on fuel container "explodes" into red smoke. Search continues around command area - more sandbags are filled with earth. The problem of a large area of bomblets around an ammunition dump - further controlled explosions (highlighting the difficulty of applying a live detonator when wearing thick NBC gloves). Comment is also made about the false sense of security that some people experience when wearing an NBC suit.
