Title:COMMANDER'S GUIDANCE ON PURGE TIMES FOR CHEMICAL AGENT VAPOUR IN CHIEFTAIN MBT [Main Title]
Film Number:DED 213
Other titles:PORTON DOWN VIDEO COLLECTION [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: A series of field trials on the Chieftain main battle tank demonstrate its suitability for use in a chemical environment.
Description: Bromobutane is put into the tank's air filter and staff carry out a pressure and leakage test. Simple repairs are made to allow pressurisation. The tank is taken to the trials building; the vehicles exhausts are pumped out of the building and a chemical agent simulant (TEP) in pumped in and machines are set up to analyse results. The simulant is fanned and monitored. Trials are carried out to analyse the effect of opening the hatch, and also carrying out replenishment: the tank's NBC system helped to purge the tank even though the hatches had been opened. After each trial, the building and the tank were purged with air.
