Summary: Trial during which a Chieftain main battle tank is sprayed with simulated contaminant to assess both the potency of the spray and the integrity of the tank's seals.
Description: (Reel 1) 0-100 A. View of range where the trial is taking place; Royal Navy helicopter (Westland Whirlwind) flies overhead. The helicopter hovers as the spray device, suspended beneath on a long cable, is lined up. It then makes three runs over the static tank, the underslung spray device coming close to the vehicle. View of sampling cards; technician gathers them up for analysis. After the trial, several personnel (including a young woman in a white lab coat) inspect the tank. Bedford lorry backs up; tank crew emerge from the turret and climb into the lorry. (100 ft)
(Reel 2) 100-200 B. Tank crew in NBC suits and respirators refuel the Chieftain from jerricans; close shots of the turret. Fuel level is checked using dipstick. Seals on smoke projectors and other vulnerable parts of the tank are checked. Sampling cards are removed from the interior of the tank and thrown to the ground. Crewman gets inside and closes the hatch. Turret is rotated, and the tank begins to drive off. (103 ft)
