Summary: Promotional film about the British Chieftain tank, from drawing board to manufacture.
Description: Film contains footage of the vehicle's cross - country performance, swimming, loading on to a transporter, engine maintenance, gunnery including method of sighting, stowage of ammunition, loading, stripping of breech block, commanders cupola and periscope. Innovations of the Chieftain tank are noted here: greater fire power, increased rate of fire and better protection for the crew from penetration of biological and chemical attack and fuel fire hazards. Models and animations illustrate Chieftain's engine compartment, driver's position in the hull and an aerial view looking onto the tank. An explanation of the low over all silhouette enabling the Chieftain to pass under low bridges when being taken on a transporter, and the greater advantage being a tactical way to hide behind low cover much more easily. There is a demonstration of the 360 degree all round vision and the rotating binocular periscope, with soldiers getting into the tank. The latter part of the film is devoted to gunnery and there is some spectacular footage of hard and special targets being hit, the depth of shot and accuracy of gun.
