Summary: An explanation of the role of the MVEE in developing IS (Internal Security) equipment.
Description: Development work is broken down into three main categories:
Protection with the modification of vehicles to include armour plating, armoured glass, anti - missile protection, mobile observation towers, protection of buildings against mortar bombs etc. Modifications to the Land Rover include a roll-over bar kit to prevent the crushing of occupants. The Humber 1-ton "Pig", mostly used in Northern Ireland, has been up-armoured providing extra outer skin to withstand small arms attack at point blank range, and has been fitted with a smoke discharger for CS or smoke grenades. It is also shown with a protective wire mesh to combat rioters/petrol bombers. The Saracen has been up-armoured with steel mesh to reduce vulnerability to anti-armour missles and for protection of commanders and high ranking visitors from terroirsts; civilian cars are shown fitted with armour. The turret has been fitted with a GPMG or a riot gun, the single shot GPMG having a good elevation angle to enable snipers in high rise flats to be engaged.
Crowd Control and Barriers, including a water dispenser mounted on a Saracen to knock down rioters without giving them secondary injuries, a Lazy Tong vehicle trap to stop cars speeding through military checkpoints and mobile personnel shields to protect against snipers or gun men holding hostages in buildings.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal: the development of the Mk 1 to Mk 7 Wheelbarrow and how the design has changed from wheels to tracks to provide greater mobility and better curb clearance. An amoured fork lift truck to carry a Wheelbarrow and the development of a small remote-controlled six-wheel vehicle called a Privateer.
