Summary: Documentary about the state of the communist movement in the West, fifty years on from the Russian Revolution.
Description: Because the predicted World Revolution of the early dawn of Communist success has not yet occurred, this documentary surveys the prospects of modern communism and sketches its history. There is film tracing very superficially Russia from 1917 to the Khrushchev era, tracing the European communist parties between the wars and Soviet domination of post-war Europe. There is film of Castro, Che Guevara and Ho Chi Minh, the cult figures of the New left in the 1960s. There is film of Paris in May 1968, when the working movement parted company with the student intellectual left. There is film from Italy where it seems the electorally successful communist party is working through democratic, constitutional channels. With disillusionment at the Russian leadership of world communism over Czechoslovakia in 1968, the programme ends by holding out the hope of Mao as the new inspiration for the left of a new and less repressive brand of communism.
