Summary: Third of three BBC Schools programmes for secondary pupils using stock footage with conventional historical commentary, dealing with the war 1940-5.
Description: The programme provides a rapid overview in the war against Germany using stock footage as illustration for the briefest of narrations of war events. The story of the Battle of Britain 1940 is rather exaggerated. The major campaigns of the British and Americans are briefly considered but from 1942 little mention is made of the Eastern Front. Brian Redhead concludes by saying the Germans are no more "rotten" than anyone else but that "inside everyone there are forces of violence and cruelty. Perhaps the tragedy of Germany was that Hitler knew this and used it for his own ends". As with the other programmes the stock footage consists of newsreels and feature films.
