Other titles:
Summary: Three colour silent amateur newsreels taken in Gateshead showing people relaxing, enjoying themselves and celebrating.
Description: The first sequence shows jubilant crowds in the streets celebrating VE Day, a march past of military units as well as boy scouts and girl guides and local dignitaries taking the salute. The second sequence shows the visit of the Queen to the Queen Elizabeth Memorial Hospital in March 1948 amidst cheering crowds. The third and longest sequence shows activities from June 1944, during a local campaign called 'Holidays at Home', in Saltwell Park, Gateshead. Included are many shots of children's sports competitions, running races, sack races, egg and spoon races, etc; many shots of adults enjoying games of bowls; shots of displays of gymnastics by a local school; shots of a Scottish pipe band parading; many shots of young people, mostly women, dancing to a military dance band, fast, elaborate jive dance routines. The general effect is that of a community relaxing in the peace of summer as though no war were going on. The camera work is good but the colour has slightly faded in places.
