Summary: Home movie of HMS Capetown on the China Station, at Nanking August 1937, immediately after the start of the Sino-Japanese Incident.
Description: HMS Capetown arrived at Nanking on 1st August 1937 to act as a radio link for the British Consul with the outside world and as guardian for the English and American population. The Chinese soon erected booms across the Yangtse to prevent the Japanese from attacking the city and so the Capetown was cut off from the sea. A Japanese warship is seen passing the Capetown. There are shots of the crew of the Capetown relaxing, the officers on deck and at a barbecue ashore, the men playing rounders on land. Various boxes and packages are loaded on board the Capetown including some from the British Consul. Sacks of coal are also brought on board. This is the first of three reels which provide a unique film record of the Capetown at Nanking.
