Summary: Home movie of HMS Capetown on the China Station, featuring the rescue of SS Yolande March 1938 and life at Wei-Hai-Wei naval base.
Description: The film begins with shots of sailors in cutters. There is then a sequence showing the rescue of the crew of the 6,380 ton French freighter SS Yolande, on 7th March 1938, aground near Betty Cove, opposite Alceste Island near the Shantung Promontory. There are shots of breeches buoys in action and the rescued sailors ashore. There then follow scenes at Wei-Hai-Wei where a Japanese force had just taken over the island of Liukugnato, the Chinese and British dockyards. The Japanese respected the neutrality of the British presence there. A Japanese warship is seen in the harbour, officers and crew are going ashore. There is a semi-serious football match between sailors with bands playing, a Chinese audience and much clowning about. There are shots from the Capetown crow's nest.
