Summary: Anti-Franco film by a veteran of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade of 1936/8 about Spain under Franco, and post-war American support for the regime.
Description: Abe Osheroff's film makes the point that America today (under Nixon) is led by men who make the same mistakes as America in the 1930s (under Roosevelt) with regard to supporting a Fascist regime. There are many film sources providing footage of America in the 1920s and '30s, of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade fighting in the Spanish Civil War, film from Osheroff's return to Spain in the early 1970s, interviews with those in the Spanish opposition movement, "underground film" shot in Spain and official US post-war material. The film follows Osheroff from the American labour movement of the 1930s to the International Brigade 1937/8. Osheroff expresses the disillusionment at the end of World War II when Mussolini and Hitler were dead but Franco received US aid in return for military bases. Spain is an atomic arsenal of long range bombers (one of which crashed in January 1966) and more recently of missile sites. Despite apparent acceptance of Franco, Osheroff finds and chronicles a coherent resistance movement inside Spain.
