Montgomery, Bernard Law1887-11-171976-03-24Montgomery attended the Royal Military College at Sandhurst and entered the army in 1908. He served in the First World War, ending it as temporary lieutenant colonel. In 1920 he went to the staff college at Camberley and on passing out in December that year was posted to Cork, Ireland. By 1926 he was back at Camberley as an instructor and he spent a large number of the inter-war years training troops. In 1942 he was appointed commander of the Eighth Army in Africa. On his success in North Africa he was promoted to general. He then joined plans for the Allied invasion of Normandy. By the end of the war he had been promoted to field marshal and in 1946 was made First Viscount Montgomery of Alamein. From 1951 to 1956 he was deputy supreme commander of NATO forces.
