Summary: Amateur film with titles shot by Belgian bank manager Carl de Brouwer records his wife and another Belgian couple on cycling holiday through the Rhineland in July 1936. Glimpses of contemporary German life (Hitler Youth, Reichsarbeitsdienst, "Jews not wanted here" sign) emerge from tourist scenes.
Description: Reel 1: Map of route along Rhine Valley. Carl de Brouwer, his wife, with friends Joseph and Yvonne de Hemptinne (also from Ghent) get off train at Cologne railway station with bicycles at start of tour. Paddle tugs on Rhine beside Cologne Cathedral. Map route to Brühl: canoeing on river, coffee and cakes. Siebengebirge: by small train up the Drachenfels, then bicycling down the Eifel. Map route to Remagen: mending bicycle tyre. Hohe Acht peak. Benedictine Abbey of Maria Laach. Wading in lake. Girls of BDM (Bund deutscher Mädchen) march past. En route to Koblenz; at base of Dreieck. Swastika flags draped from windows mark festival at St Goar on Rhine. RAD (Reichsarbeitsdienst) men pause on country road, then march off. Wine tasting.
Reel 2: Map route from St Goar to Mainz: visit to Germania monument. Rain in Wiesbaden. Buying frankfurters in Frankfurt. Autobahn with few vehicles. Views of planes at Frankfurt airport include Junkers Ju 52 civil aircraft, one marked Gustav Leefers; officers of newly formed Luftwaffe in foreground. Cycling and tour in open bus in Black Forest. Café scenes in Baden-Baden. Views in Heidelberg; large crowd awaits arrival of Hitler (not seen, although speech heard by Carl de Brouwer). Sign on railway platform "Juden sind hier unerwünscht". Boarding ferry at Mainz with bicycles to descend Rhine; river views of Rhine castles and rapids, passing St Goar and concluding tour at Koblenz.
