Summary: Amateur film records the effect of war on a London suburb, from bomb damage and ARP precautions at school in 1940 to the parades for various weapons fund raising weeks from 1941 to 1944.
Description: REEL 1 (Black and white) Salvage work in Villiers Road, Hounslow after air raid damage on 5 October 1940. Hounslow High Street and Woolworths ablaze on night of 13 November 1940, with firemen fighting flames into daylight. "Carrying on unperturbed" as service at food counter continues seemingly unaffected by Blitz. Burnt out Curry's and Giltrow shops. "A day in the life of school children": primary school children playing netball and in classroom make their way carrying boxed gasmasks to underground shelter; children cultivate cabbages on playing field; half pints of milk are wheeled into shelter. 9 August 1941: Miss Margaret Bondfield MP, supported by Squadron Leader E H Keeling MC, visits the Borough of Heston and Isleworth to appeal for women volunteers to go into munitions factories; service and civil units, including women already dressed in trousered overalls, parade through streets. REEL 2 (Colour) 1941 War Weapons Week, 17-24 May: posters and banners appeal for savings to "Give our Fighting Forces the Striking Power for Victory", celebrated by parade by service and civil units past Mayor, including searchlight battery, Home Guard Mobile Canteen and improvised ambulances. Civilians buy savings certificates, while soldiers drink tea at mobile canteen and children pay to inspect Spitfire (K9918). 1942 Heston and Isleworth Warships Week, 21-28 March: parade as in 1941 with addition of large model corvette wheeled past and RAF HE and incendiary bombs on trolley. (Black and white) 1943 Wings for Victory Week, 6-13 March: enlarged parade, with Churchill's letter of support for savings campaign and poster "Two Busloads over Berlin" highlighting the RAF's strategic offensive against Germany by comparing length of two double decker buses with size of bomb doors of Stirling bomber. 1944 Salute the Soldier campaign: parade enlarged by marching soldiers of the US Army bearing the Stars and Stripes flag.
