Description: The Duke of Edinburgh is greeted by Earl Jellicoe at Yeovilton for review and static display of aircraft. History: airships 1914, Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) formed July 1st 1914, first seaplane carrier 1916, Battle of Jutland, airship anti-submarine patrol. Sopwith Pup launched 1917; first deck landing, development of aircraft carrier. Amalgamation with RAF 1918. Inter-war developments: catapult, Fairey Sea Fox, Sopwith Cuckoo, HMS Furious reconstructed, wheel brakes. World War Two: Swordfish losses, HMS Ark Royal a "new Naval weapon", control of Fleet Air Arm restored to Royal Navy; role in convoy protection, war in the East, lend-lease; the jet. HMS Vanguard - "the end of an era". Modern developments in the carrier ensure survival of Fleet Air Arm's role in nuclear age; the helicopters. Flypast at Jubilee review; Fleet Air Arm "an essential element in the maintenance of law and order in the trouble spots of the world".
