- Summary:
- Description: Infantrymen from the 2nd Battalion East York Regiment are seen digging in and taking cover from German shell or mortar fire near the village of Touffreville. Shermans from the 13/18th Hussars operating with 3rd Division's 8th Brigade pick their way past the Château de Sannerville (in the background) into the village of Sannerville which has been wrecked by the previous day's bombing and fighting. Two soldiers serving with the 1st Suffolk Regiment dig a trench for their platoon HQ between sleepers on the Caen-Troarn railway at Banneville-la-Campagne. The railway and the adjoining area have been laid waste by RAF bombing. A bomb crater provides an ample blast shelter for one of the Suffolk's jeeps. Universal carriers belonging to the 51st Highland Division's 152nd Brigade driving down the Escoville - Troarn road pass a wrecked 21st Panzer Division SdKfz 250 half- track. A knocked-out 7.5cm anti-tank gun on a French Somua half- track chassis lies abandoned near a road along which 3rd Division signallers are laying telephone cables. 9th Brigade infantry moves up to take up positions in a brick factory (?) beyond Sannerville.

- Notes: Note: See with A70 87-6, 89-4, 90-8 and 94-2 and 3 for footage showing 3rd British Division units in action during and shortly after Operation "Goodwood". Both of the wrecked German half-tracks seen here belonged to units in the 21st Panzer Division which, as was the case with many German formations based in France, used captured French equipment to remedy its shortage of German-made vehicles. Remarks: Good footage. Best seen with items of film listed above and with material relating to Operation "Goodwood" in general. Documentation/associated material: for a bibliography, read Norman Scarfe's 'Assault Division' and 'The History of the 2nd World War - Victory in the West : Volume 1' by L F Ellis.
