Summary: A BBC television film marking the disbandment of the Durham Light Infantry (DLI) in September 1968, using filmed interviews, historical film, prints, paintings, photographs and narration.
Description: The film starts and ends at the parade on the occasion of the laying up of the regimental colours at Durham Cathedral in the presence of Princess Alexandra. The rest of the film recounts the history of the DLI from its birth in 1881 through its participation at Ladysmith and in most theatres of both World Wars. A First World War veteran and Captain Richard Allen display contrasting views about war. Montgomery's epithet about the DLI is recalled. Colonel John Jacob discusses the regiment's post war "trouble-shooting" role in Korea, Egypt, Berlin, Hong Kong, Borneo and in Cyprus as part of the UN "international police force". September 1st 1968 marks "the final salute" but "the spirit of the Durham Light Infantry will live on" in the new amalgamated Light Infantry Division.
