Description: Item 1. WHO ARE YOU? "Herbert Hodge DWRB" talks about the (then-recent) national registration scheme and the issue of Identity Cards. Dramatised scenes follow the route of one of the enumerators, Mr Raynor, as he went about his duty, and the work of the women tabulating the information and making changes.
Item 2. STANDING BY. Activities inside hospitals in preparation for possible war casualties. Staff undergo training and physical exercise. They wait ready for action, amusing themselves with various activities (ship models, darts, music, chess). Whenn the "yellow warning" of an air raid comes, it means enemty aircraft have been sighted so nurses take up position, and equipment and medications. The nurses pass the waiting time by knitting; "the doctors wait, but they don't knit" (they are shown standing around an open fire). Everybody waits until the white signal indicates the all clear. "Whichever way things go, you can be sure that the hospitals are well and truly ready.
Item 3. WHERE'S THE FIRE? Wartime has brought numerous innovations into the Fire Service, including a variety of new vehicles and the addition of women to the fire crews. Thousands of civilians in the Auxiliary Fire Service are keeping themselves up to standard by constant practice. Various drills are shown, including the firemans lift and the use of hoses. Practice drills in London, locations including St Paul's Cathedral and the River Thames. Fire engines scramble. Members of the AFS tackle a blazing oil spill on water, and a fire at a railway sidings in Edinburgh. "Thank you AFS.".
