Description: Julien Bryan, an American correspondent, was in Warsaw in September 1939 when the Germans invaded Poland. This short documentary is compiled from the film he smuggled out. There are shots of civilians preparing defences in the streets, retreating soldiers and the bridges over the Vistula still intact after enemy air raids. There are scenes of houses and flats on fire after incendiary bombing, devastated streets, a destroyed hospital and a church. There are shots of homeless bomb victims in the open, women queuing for bread and people moving all their belongings through the streets. There are scenes of a massacre outside Warsaw and of anguished civilians talking to Bryan. The film ends with close-ups and medium close-ups of crying, bewildered civilians.
