Summary: Local "topical" record of cycling club members in the North East of England enjoying the ceremonial festivities of the 38th annual Barnard Castle Meet on the eve of the First World War.
Description: "Saturday May 30. Newcastle and District cyclists leaving Barras Bridge": Men watch cyclists, including one woman, set off from Newcastle. (Veteran cyclist Mr J H 'Sticks' Woods, wearing large trilby and smoking cigarette, stands to left of first group. Meet President for 1914 was Mr D H Allan, arriving late, with flat cap and dark moustache.) "The Meeting of the Presidents and the exchanging of badges at Ovington, Sunday night May 31": Mr Bert Walker, as retiring President, hands badge of office to Mr Allan in car. "Monday June 1. Scenes in the Inner Bailey. The Procession and judging of competitors": Music hall style stage performance and amateur theatrics in the Inner Ward of the partly ruined Barnard Castle, performed by the competing Cycling Clubs, and watched by crowd of spectators (Inner Ward too small to fit such numbers, so presumably a cut-in). Fancy dress procession (big feature of the weekend) led by band with trio playing Northumberland pipes and comprising men and women dressed up in a variety of period and fancy costumes, passes through the Horse Market. One bears placard reading "Amers could'nt get" (ie cycling club member "was'nt able to come").
