Summary: Programme of official Polish commemorations marking the 25th anniversary of the German destruction of the Warsaw Ghetto covers the annual wreath laying ceremony at the Nathan Rappaport Memorial to the Heroes of the Warsaw Ghetto, the opening in Block 27 at Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum by the Polish Ministry of Culture of an exhibition presenting the history of the martyrdom of the Jews, and the grave of Julian Grobelny, the Polish President of Zegota (Council for Aid to Jews).
Description: Present day views of rebuilt Murawno area of Warsaw contrast with film and photographs of same area during German destruction of Ghetto in 1943 (some 1944 film used). Polish Deputy Minister of Culture now lays wreath at the annual ceremony at the Memorial to the heroes and martyrs of the Rising, also attended by Jewish delegations from abroad. Similar contrast is drawn between modern appearance of Southern Polish town and railway station of Oswiecim (Auschwitz) and the camp nearby, where Minister of Culture, himself a Survivor, inaugurates Jewish block. Museum of Remembrance contains stills and objects including children's clothing and Zyklon B canisters. Commentary refers to moral complicity of Western nations with the extermination. Graves in Polish cemeteries (eg that of Julian Grobelny 1893-1944, head of organisation set up to save Jews) also commemorate war years as does final shot, 1945 pan over razed Warsaw.
