Summary:Amateur film of the ceremonial handing over of swords by the Japanese General Kimura and his staff to the General Officer Commander in Chief and staff of the 12th Army on the 24th October 1945, Rangoon, Burma. The parade was held in a square opposite Army HQ in Rangoon. The Guard of Honour is provided by the 1st Battalion Royal Berks Regiment, and the 25th Indian Mountain Regiment (Royal Artillery, Indian Army). The General Officer Commander in Chief, Lieutenant General Sir Montagu Stopford is accompanied by Air Marshal Sir Hugh Saunders, Air Marshal Commanding RAF Burma Captain K S Lyle. The General Officer Commander in Chief calls on General Kiruma and his staff to surrender their swords to their opposite numbers of Headquarters 12th Army and the Naval Officer in Charge representatives. Description:Brigadier E F E Armstrong holds General Kimura's sword, General Sir Montagu Stopford salutes behind (this scene appears to be out of sequence). Japanese officers surrender their swords to their opposite numbers of Headquarters 12th Army and the NOIC. General Kimura returns to his position. Brigadier Armstrong hands over the General's sword to General Sir Montagu Stopford, he salutes and turns. Another officer is holding the sword in the next shot. They turn and march from the parade ground past the 12th Army sign (a chinthe above XII on a red and black background) at the base of the flagpole.
