Summary: Continuation of interview with David Vallance.
Description: Mr Vallance discusses the background to the project, mentioning that Morris Singer tried to turn down the project on several occasions, but the Iraqis insisted that no one else could do it. He also talks about Baghdad and the site (a military parade ground and facility) where the two "Hands of Victory" arches would be set up. Three companies were involved, the various parts being sponsored by the Iraqi Ministry of Housing: a German company of structural engineers were doing the steelwork, while the casting was being done by Morris Singer, with some parts being sub-contracted to Henshaws in Edinburgh. He also explains how the sculptor Philip Jackson came to be involved in enlarging the models to a 1 to 3 and a 1 to 1 ratio maquettes. "Accuracy of enlargement is important." Haggling over the contracts is also discussed.
