Summary: Amateur film shot by Able Seaman, later Sub-Lieutenant RNVR, Lyndon Thomas while serving on HMS Ramillies (January 1941-July 1943) and «HMS Poppy» (November 1943-July 1945) includes scenes of naval life at sea and ashore and Flower Class corvette escort duties on convoys to Russia and Newfoundland.
Description: Reel 1: On board «HMS Ramillies» in South Atlantic, approaching Capetown and distant view of St Helena. Auction of a seaman's clothing (to provide for next of kin) following his disappearance overboard.(B&W)
Reel 2: Similar (but not identical) to Reel 1. Also includes Straits of Gibraltar and «HMS Warspite»(Colour)
Reel 3: On board «HMS Poppy» while escorting convoys to Russia, from Londonderry to White Sea, Dvina Bar and Kola Inlet. Off Akureyri Fjord, Iceland (Winter 1943-1944). During Operation Neptune (June 1944) off D-Day beaches. Heavy seas during Operation Goodwood (August 1944). Football ashore in Londonderry, with aerials visible in background. Scenes in Firth of Clyde, including RN submarine. (B&W)
Reel 4: North Atlantic convoy assemblng in Greenock, with biplanes overhead. Arriving off St John's. Ice-covered deck steamed off by pipes. Shore leave in wintry Newfoundland. Interior cabin views. Departing Londonderry, and Newfoundland. Summer scenes ashore in St John's. «HMS Inman» (K.571) arriving in Londonderry on VE Day, and celebrations on «HMS Poppy». «HMS Dianella» (K.07). U-boat arriving in St John's to surrender, flying white flag. Last departure from Newfoundland. Disposing of ammunition post-war. Back in Londonderry, with surrendered U-boat visible, and long line of Flower Class corvettes on mudflats. (Colour, B&W)
