Summary: Amateur film shot by Alfred Crossberg (known as Alfred Kreutzberger prior to emigration from Germany to South Africa in 1936) records scenes in his new home country, including VE Day in Johannesburg on 8 May 1945 and the Royal Visit to South Africa in 1947.
Description: 1. "VE Day in Johannesburg, 1945. " Scenes in Johannesburg streets, festooned with banners, bunting, signs and flags of the Empire and Allies. Stuttafords department store. Large numbers of people (mainly white, but with some black South Africans). Soldiers line the streets and keep the crowds back, as a parade of military and civil vehicles pass. Close-up on the Mayor’s car as it passes. Night scenes show many neon displays, including the word "Victory" on Stuttafords.
2. "Bar B Q". Scenes at a large, Dutch style public building with formal gardens where a barbecue (not seen) is being held.
3. "Royal Visit – 1947. Mafeking." Scenes on the streets of Mafeking: military band plays prior to the arrival of the Royal Party. The royal cars arrive: silent banter with the chauffeurs. At an outdoor event, HM King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, accompanied by Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret, meet local dignitaries; the princesses are given posies. The King meets veterans (of both world wars). The royal family head back to their cars: the camera is very close to them as they pass.
4. The Crossberg family home and surrounding landscape, Johannesburg.
