Film Number:A70 165-1

Summary: The capture of both bridges spanning the Waal at Nijmegen by units of the Guards Armoured Division and the US 82nd Airborne Division brings 30th Corps to within ten miles of the beleaguered 1st Airborne Division at Oosterbeek.
Description: Sherman tanks belonging to the 2nd Irish Guards' No 3 Squadron and Cromwell tanks from the 2nd Welsh Guards move across the two thousand foot long road bridge into the mist covering the "island", the stretch of polderland lying between Nijmegen and Arnhem. The bodies of German soldiers and broken barbed-wire barricades, the remains of the previous day's struggle for the bridge, litter the pavements and roadway at its southern end. Downstream lies the Nijmegen railway bridge, captured simultaneously by American paratroopers from 504th Regiment's 3rd Battalion. Guards Armoured Division engineers remove German demolition charges in the shape of Tellermines and TNT charges from the bridge's structure and stack them on the pavement. Vehicles from the 3rd Irish Guards overtake a 1st Welsh Guards column moving slowly under the bridge's massive steel archway. A mutilated German corpse lies by the pavement in the foreground.
