- Summary: Beekeeping supplies and seeds are the essential tools of an AICF-USA relief programme designed to stimulate self-support among beneficiaries.
- Description: Shots of fields and an AICF-USA jeep. AICF-USA sponsors a number of different projects in the Bogojno region. Interview with Robert Jacobi of AICF-USA who stands in the warehouse that stores their equipment and aid. This includes veterinary drugs, cook stoves, roof tiles, paints, hospital equipment, tonnes of seed and bee keeping medicines and supplies. Robert Jacobi explains that this warehouse is just a temporary holding area and they try to distribute its contents as fast as possible. Shots of a beekeeper at work. Mustafa Gurbeta explains that he is preparing his hives for the winter. He says that when the aid organisation arrived he was the first to contact them as he needed drugs urgently for his bees to keep them alive. He says that bees are important especially in this region as they pollinate the local fruit orchards. Shots of the fruit trees and the rows of hives. He worked in a factory in Bugojno before the war when it closed down and his house was burnt during the battles between the Bosnian Government and Croatian armies a year ago. Panning shot across the town of Bugojno. The town is still only a few kilometres from the confrontation line and shells can be heard falling here. Since the start of the war agriculture has taken on a more important role now that it is the main source of food and income here. Shots of workers in a lettuce field. Robert Jacobi explains that more food was produced in this region from AICF-USA seeds than was imported by humanitarian aid agencies. AICF-USA aims to help people become self-sustaining rather than relying on constant food distribution by international agencies. Jacobi explains that they expect farmers to return twenty percent of their harvest to the local council so that it can be distributed to displaced people and the most vulnerable in society. A woman leads a cow out of a barn and a vet injects its neck with medicine. These medicines have been provided by AICF-USA. Men walk in the fields around Gornji Vakuf. The vet inspects the hooves of sheep in the field. They are suffering from a hoof disease that could kill them if they are not cured by winter. Currently, though, this vet lacks the necessary drugs to treat them. Interview with Ilija Majic, the vet, who explains that he is only able to give advice until these drugs arrive. Shots of a meeting of agriculturists in Novi Travnik. Robert Jacobi addresses them and explains that they are there to help them solve any agricultural problems that they have. Panning shot of the countryside outside Bugojno. AICF-USA believes that after the war agriculture will be of great importance to the region’s future and that the work they have supported over the past few years will be richly rewarded.
