- Summary: UNTV reports on the progress of the UN's first ever preventative peacekeeping mission in Macedonia, two years after it was first established. This film shows how potential border conflicts are resolved by NORBAT soldiers.
- Description: Shots of UNPROFOR APCs rolling over a bridge and going into a UN base in Macedonia. Hugo Anson, UN Delegate, explains the UN’s peacekeeping role in Macedonia. Their primary aim has been to protect the Macedonian border and prevent fighting breaking out within that border. He hopes that now they can take on more of a political and economic role. There are 29 Observation Posts along the Macedonian border of Serbia and Albania, manned by 570 NORBAT and 540 USBAT soldiers. On-screen text confirms that UNPROFOR’s mandate in the area is to ‘monitor and report any developments in the border area which could undermine...Macedonia or threaten its territory’. Shoots of USBAT troops on patrol and of one of the new helicopters known as ‘White Hawks’ by the UN. Lieutenant Colonel John Baggott, US Battalion Commander, explains the exercise and comments on the good support they have received from the Macedonian and Serbian forces.Scenes of Skopje. Interview with President Kiro Gligorov who says that 1000 troops cannot ensure complete protection but they let any aggressor know that their actions are being monitored and the international community could react in time. He also says that this is the first US deployment under a foreign command, which shows their engagement with the Balkans. Shots of UNPROFOR soldiers negotiating with Macedonian and Serbian soldiers to establish a UN-controlled buffer zone between the two of them. Interview with Brigadier General Tryggve Tellefsen, UN Officer in Command, who explains the progress that UNPROFOR have made in the region. Interview with Defence Minister Vlado Popovski says that they are satisfied with UNPROFOR’s contribution. He says that UNPROFOR has decreased tension in the region, has preserved Macedonia’s borders and enabled the government to run. NORBAT troops are working to reassure local people that they are safe from the nearby Yugoslavian army by holding joint discussions between the two groups. They have also set up a hot line between the local Mayor’s house and the nearest Observation Post so that they can respond rapidly to new developments. Interview with Captain Ulf Dahlstrom, NORDIC Battalion Operations Officer who explains the importance of UNPROFOR as a positive presence for local people. President Gligorov says that at present the mandate is satisfactory but if there was a military threat the mandate might be updated. Brigadier General Tryggve Tellefsen says that it is important that UNPROFOR stay for five to ten years to ensure this new Republic remains stable.
