Summary: UNTV spends time with a family living in the ruins of a Vukovar suburb and looks at the question of whether a peaceful solution and coexistence are possible in Sector East.
Description: A profile of one family who have chosen to return to the war-damaged town of Vukovar. The town remains within Croatia’s internationally recognised territory but is currently controlled by Krajina Serbs. Both sides are respecting a ceasefire of the 25th of August 1995. Shots show the war damaged buildings.
Interview with the mother, her child on her lap. She says that she and her husband are making something out of it, though it is not ideal, moving to Vukovar has given her the independence to run her own household. Interview with the father, while he is on patrol as a soldier. He says that their flat is damaged but they have made it like home and though it is not perfect for a child to grow up among ruins, peace is the most important quality of their life here.
Political negotiations are still ongoing between the two sides for a long term solution in the area. Slavko Dokmanović, Mayor under the Serbian authorities in Vukovar wants to see the town under the control of the UN for five years. Milan Milanković, a Serb negotiator, explains that five years would give time for trust to build in the Croatian government and that once the time had elapsed, there would be a plebiscite to decide to which country the region belonged. The Croatian authorities only want to see UN rule for one year. Presently, the United States Ambassador Peter Galbraith is negotiating with the figure of two years. The outcome of these negotiations will affect whether other residents return to this region so scarred by war.
