Summary: With Bosnian Government forces now in control of the entire Bihać pocket, rebel Muslims from Velika Kladuša have chosen to leave their homes and are living in tents and make shift structures across the border in Croatia. With no third country willing to take them in, what are their prospects?
Description: For the second time in a year, residents of Velika Kladuša are refugees. They are stuck 20 km north of their home town, which fell to the Bosnian Government 5th Corps. Shots of people walking along streets beside makeshift homes. They have been prevented from going any further into Croatia and must therefore live on the side of the road. Refugees say that they are getting hardly any aid and that conditions are horrible because water is becoming polluted. Last year these followers of Fikret Abdić left their home town but were again prevented from entering Croatia and were forced to return home by the Krajina Serbs. Mans Nyberg, spokesperson for UNHCR says that this is a totally different situation as Abdić no longer has military power in the area.
Croatian authorities are finally allowing humanitarian aid into the area for the first time in four days. Transportation of aid has been very difficult for the ICRC. When interviewed these refugees do not want to return to Velika Kladuša while it is held by the Bosnian government. UNHCR (as mediators), Bosnian and Croatian governments have reached a preliminary agreement that Abdić’s people will get amnesty when they return to Bosnian territory. UNHCR do not want any more refugees in Croatia as there are already a huge number waiting to be resettled. Mans Nyberg says that Abdić needs to rubberstamp the agreement in order for people to return voluntarily but he is not a part of the official negotiations.
