Summary: Determining the ethnic composition of Macedonia is a contentious political issue. This film covers the role an up-to-date census played in establishing a basis for elections in this newest of EU member states.
Description: Shots of street scenes and close ups on the many faces of Macedonia. Between the 21st of June and the 11th of July this year a census of Macedonia's two million people has been conducted by the government. Interview with Hugo Aston, UN Delegate who says that the census is good basis for holding elections in the autumn and a necessary tool for any government. Interview with Risto Ivanov, President of the Government Census Commission. He says that the census will be carried out according to European and international standards to work out the ethnicity and religion of every individual. Interview with Mohamed Halili, Party for Democratic Prosperity who says that despite their misgivings, the party decided to vote for the census law. There were concerns that Macedonian Albanians would boycott the census as they did in 1991.

President Gligorov says that he hopes everyone will complete the census. Interview with Werner Haug, Chairman of the Europe Group of Experts who says that the only aim of the census is to obtain accurate information and is not politically motivated to harm minorities.
