- Title: UNTIL DEATH DO US PART [Main Title]
- Film Number: UNT 693
- Other titles: UNITED NATIONS TELEVISION (UNTV) ZAGREB COLLECTION, YUGOSLAVIA [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Why do the Serbs in occupied parts of Croatia insist on their own state? What fuels their refusal to live as part of Croatia? UNTV looks at life and death in "Krajina". Includes interview with Milan Martić.
- Description: Opens with shots of the Krajina: streets thronging with people, soldiers firing shells and tanks on patrol. Soldiers are shown waving their guns as they are transported on tanks. The Croat Army has taken control of this previously Serb-controlled area. How are Serbs reacting to this change? Are they carrying on normal lives? Scenes of a Serb wedding. Interview with a guest who says that the most important point for him was to remain at home, where his family have lived for generations. Sounds of chanting and shots of lit candles. These Serbs believe that this land has always belonged to them. There is a sense of entitlement to land that has been a home for their families for generations. The mother of the bride says that her grandmother lived here and her grandchild, too, will be born here. Shots of funerals and coffins being lowered into the ground. In Western Slavonia, Krajina Serbs are burying their dead and continuing their fight by uniting with Bosnian Serbs to fight for the inclusion of this region into a Greater Serbia. The song they sing as the coffins are lowered includes the lines “Let my prayer be a curse for my enemies / Hey Lord can you hear us? Shed a tear for us all, Lord”. Interview with Milan Martić, Krajina Serb Leader. He says that this union between the Krajina Serbs and the Bosnian Serbs is the first step. He says that they have a right to do this as a form of self-determination and “to protect the biological survival of Serbs on those territories from the genocide we are threatened with”. Footage of soldiers on patrol. V/O: confusing the loss of power with genocide is happening all over the Krajina. Interview with a young man who says that for the young, this situation cannot be solved in a peaceful way. “We want all Serbs to live together so that nobody can kill us any longer or mistreat us.” He says that during the Second World War the Croatians “tried to kill us off” and they do not want to let that happen again. Shots of church flying a Serbian flag and of a Serbian Orthodox service. After the service, the priest says that people did used to respect each other and that Catholics even used to come to services here but that this does not happen anymore.
