Summary: Two women who live on opposite sides of Mostar share similar experiences and fears and both find some respite from the war at the women's centres operated by Marie Stopes International.
Description: Report detailing the similarities between the daily lives of two women, each living on different sides of the Neretva River in Mostar. On the East side one woman takes care of her four children in a one-room apartment that does not have a bathroom. Her family used to live on the West side until one night in 1993 when they were forced out and her husband was imprisoned. Her husband Mohammed was only released last February. In the West side, the second woman, Vera Yacek, and her family, were forced out of their apartment on the East side and were imprisoned for seven months before they were released as part of a prisoner exchange and allowed to live on the West side.
These women share many of the same daily struggles but they also both go to Marie Stopes International women’s centres on either side of the river. There, women are able to talk to each other about their problems, have counselling sessions and take part in handicraft projects. There are twenty Marie Stopes International (MSI) centres in the former Yugoslavia and both of these women hope that they will remain after the war.
(As of 2010, MSI is not operating in Bosnia Herzegovina.)
