Title:JOSEF BÜRCKEL DURING ANSCHLUSS [Allocated Title]
Film Number:MGH 6774
Other titles:AMATEUR FILM BY UNIDENTIFIED AUSTRIAN CAMERAMAN [Alternative Title]
Summary: Amateur film presumably shot by an Austrian supporter of the German Anschluss with his country records informal scenes at an unidentified airfield of Josef Bürckel in civilian dress (so before his appointment as Gauleiter of Vienna on 30 January 1939) surrounded by a throng of Austrian National Socialists before he boards a Junkers Ju 52 (Erwin Boehme - D-ATON) of Lufthansa which departs.
Description: Bürckel in light-coloured civilian raincoat and trilby hat walks away from a hangar across an airfield in Austria bordered by forested hills, and is accompanied by men in Nazi Party uniforms intent on engaging him in conversation. A sense of urgency and expectation prevails. Crowds in the background are contained by uniformed men. Focke-Wulf Fw44 (OE-TLI) biplane trainer of Austrian Air Force visible. Bürckel is presented with parting gifts of bottles of wine, which he passes to an adjutant. The cameraman enjoys a privileged position throughout, standing close to his subject, and ends by filming uniformed SS members (his comrades?) making adjustments to their black uniforms, while aware of being recorded by the camera.
