Summary: How the small businessman in Sarajevo is coping with the conditions brought on by war.
Description: Street shots of Sarajevo. The late 1980s had been a time of economic liberalisation and the establishment of new private businesses. For example the Princess Bakery had employed 35 people, making 35 different types of breads and cakes but the war made it impossible to keep the business going and it closed. Now it has been reopened but it is still only producing one tenth of what was produced before the war because of the fluctuating prices of ingredients and staff shortages.
Under the Special Coordinator Mr. Eagleton, the UN has seven offices designed to rejuvenate Sarajevo. One of these is City Development, responsible for the revival of economic enterprise in the city. Jean Baptiste Dupont is the Chief of this Section and he says that there are many examples of small businesses re-emerging and he is optimistic that with some financial encouragement more will do so. The Section is carrying out extensive research to find out what would help residents restart their businesses.
Shots of the market, a baker’s window and street side stalls. For the Princess Bakery, help from City Development would mean training programmes for new bakers and investment in equipment. It is just one example of a business that would benefit from capital investment.
