Summary: Serbian refugees from Croatia and Bosnia now living in Belgrade discuss the problems they face in staying out of the Yugoslav Army.
Description: In Belgrade, a refugee, who does not want to be identified, says that they spend their time avoiding the police because they are afraid that they will be forced to fight. From the 1st of June, Serbian police began an operation to force refugees into the army. They picked them up in public places and from their homes. Though the operation was stopped four weeks later, refugees continue to feel paranoid and unsafe.
Serbian citizens also got caught up in the operation if they were born in the disputed Krajina region between Bosnia and Croatia. In interviews Serbian citizens say that armed police officers came to their doors to check their documentation and then took them to barracks where they were interviewed. They were put on a bus to Mitrovica and then distributed onto further buses depending on where they were born. At the border they were handed over to the Krajina police who escorted them to Plitvice. One man who tried to run away is shown in a hospital bed, metal supports in both his thighs. The others were taken to the frontline and given a gun with no training. Some were lucky and were finally released because of their Serbian citizenship. Adelmo Risi of UNHCR says that some “mistakes” have been admitted to by the Serbian government and they have been told that these errors will be corrected.
On the streets of Belgrade, though, there was support for the operation. In an assortment of interviews people said that “sending them back to the front-line, it’s right”, “they should defend their homes” and one man said that those who have come from Bosnia, “they are all pushers, the worst plunderers”. Journalist Miloš Vasić says that attitudes towards refugees have worsened as more have arrived in the city. He says that the “only rational decision can be made on the frontline but no one listens to them, they listen to the propaganda people.” Shots of armed patrol at night. Unknown location.
The programme cuts back to the original interview with the refugee who says that since arriving he has got a job, finished school and enrolled in university. He is not interested in war, only a brighter future.
