Summary: As Serb refugees leave Croatia, Bosnian Croats are entering. Thrown out of their homes in the Banja Luka region, thousands are crossing into Croatian territory. Where can they go? What resources are available to them?
Description: Shots of refugees crossing the Sava River in crowded, small boats and on arriving at the opposite shore, collecting their belongings and being loaded into minibuses by Croatian policemen. This latest wave of Bosnian Croats fleeing from the Banja Luka area comes as Serb refugees rush out of Croatia. It is thought that the local authorities in Banja Luka are pushing out this minority to make room for the new arrivals.
Interview with Kathryn Mazy, UNHCR Social Services Officer, who explains that in Banja Luka people are being told to leave their homes immediately, that most refugees are arriving here without belongings and that they have to pay between 100 - 600 Deutschmarks per person to be transported to the riverbank. Shots of Croatian policemen taking down people’s details as more refugees arrive and climb into minibuses. Before the war there were 500,000 Bosnian Croats in the area around Banja Luka but it is thought that since it came under the control of Bosnian Serbs, the number has dropped to 50-60,000.
Shots of a crowded forecourt outside a registration centre where the refugees are taken to after arriving on Croatian soil. Interview with Rosha (sp?), who says that she has lived in Banja Luka all of her life but that in recent years they have come under pressure to trade their house for another one and her husband has been forced to work without pay for three years. She says that they were forced to trade their house for one in Okučani, but she does not know where that is yet. She says that they had to pay 500 Deutschmarks each just to leave their own country. She says that they hope to find work so that they do not need to ask the state for support. Many of her relatives remain in Banja Luka and she hope that they are all safe.
Shots of people greeting one another in the crowd. Camera pulls back to show a large crowd of Bosnian Croats waiting to be registered. UNHCR expects a large number of refugees to continue to cross the border over the coming days.
