Summary:
Description: I. "Rome greets Allied Armies." RAF film provides a clear low-level aerial view of the city into which General Clark drives in a jeep, past the Coliseum to the Capitol where he climbs the steps with General Juin. Crowds cheer their liberators and kick out at some "collaborators" emerging from the radio building. St Peter's fills with people come to listen to the Pope speak and thank the Lord for having spared the city (brief excerpt from speech). Items peripheral to the celebration in Rome include a long line of German prisoners outside the city and a bridal couple on their way to be wed passing Allied soldiers.
II. "Battle of the beaches won." Fairly full coverage of the arrival of troop reinforcements and supplies off the beaches of Normandy. US troops land on a beach beneath a cliff and advance under fire (filmed from beneath the cliff). Bombing of enemy positions continues with clear film showing Marauders dropping their loads. Views of the Atlantic Wall fortifications after being breached. Eisenhower and Ramsay on board ship off the coast await the arrival of Montgomery, who later returns ashore. Continuing success illustrated by street fighting scenes in unidentified villages and the embarkation, and disembarkation in Britain, of large numbers of prisoners.
